Chapter Fourteen: Amanda
I'm still not sure how I wound up in bed with Manny last night, screaming out my orgasms until my throat was hoarse, but I'm determined not to let it happen again. Since I'm in Perdition for work, I should really keep my interactions with Manny professional. Strictly professional, actually. No sexing with the hot coyote shifter, just chasing down my fugitive and holding her until I can meet up with the US Marshals and hand her over.
That's why I'm going on this date with Manny, I tell myself as I get ready for the evening. Manny is helping me locate Sadie Brown on the condition that I go on three dates with him. That's the only reason I'm doing this.
I shower, shave, and allow my mother to get me dolled up for the evening. One of my mother's previous careers was as a cosmetologist, and she often offers to my hair and makeup for special occasions. I do not usually let her do my makeup because I'm not a very fussy person, but decide to let her do it this time. I sit on a stool in the cramped bathroom as she goes about her business.
As she dolls me up, she asks pointed questions about Manny and how our date went the night before.
Where did we go? What did we eat? What did we do after we ate? Why were we arguing?
I answer the g-rated questions, ignore the one about our argument, then turn the tables on her.
"Why did you give Manny the key to the apartment?" I demand.
"Because I wanted you to talk to him," she says with a shrug, like the invasion of privacy is no big deal.
"Why? I spent the whole evening talking to him," I say. "I didn't need to keep talking to him when the date was over."
"Obviously, he didn't think you were finished," she says. "I simply wanted to give him the opportunity to do that."
"Why, though?" I ask.
"I saw how much time and effort you put into getting ready," she says. "You like him more than you like to let on."
"Of course, I like him," I say. "That's never been in dispute."
"You like him, like him," she says, giving me a pointed look, her eyebrow cocked.
I open my mouth to say something, but my mother silences me.
"Close your eyes and your mouth," she says. I obey her, and a moment later, she dusts loose powder over my face. It tickles my nose enough to make me sneeze. My mother hands me a tissue, and I wipe my nose. She tilts my chin up and comes at me with a brush loaded with bronzer, which she dusts over my cheekbones.
"You borrowed my dress and shoes last night, and tonight you're letting me do your makeup," she says breezily. A small smile twists her lips.
"You've done my makeup before," I say.
"The last time was when you were in high school for the senior prom," she says. "I've asked you to let me do it since then, but you usually won't let me.
